The Mercer Health Weight Management Center offers two types of weight loss procedures:

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
The sleeve gastrectomy is a restrictive weight loss procedure that creates a thin, vertical sleeve of stomach.   The size of the stomach is reduced to the size and shape of a banana, and the rest of the stomach is removed.  This surgery creates a smaller stomach, limiting the amount of food you can eat and helps you feel fuller sooner.

LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding
During this laparoscopic surgery, an adjustable, silicone band is placed around the upper part of the stomach. Once in place, the band is inflated with saline through a small port, creating a small stomach pouch that limits food consumption and creates a feeling of fullness. The band is adjustable to your needs and can be tightened or loosened over time to change the amount of food restriction.

Weight loss surgery is appropriate for those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of at least 40, or a BMI of 30 or higher with one or more obesity-related health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or sleep apnea.  To calculate your BMI, click here.
