The Medical, Educational, and Development (MED) Foundation of Mercer Health recently awarded $10,500 in scholarships to area students planning study in a health services field after graduation from high school.

Recent graduates from schools in Mercer County were on hand at a signing ceremony held recently at Mercer County Community Hospital. Scholarships were awarded to at least one person from each of the schools in the county. Two of the eight students each received a $750 scholarship while the other six each received $1500 in scholarship money.

MED Foundation Director John Hoying says, "This is our nineteenth year for our program. All of the money we have awarded since the beginning has gone to help students graduating from schools in Mercer County. The total amount awarded since our program began is over $150,000."

Receiving $1500 scholarships (and the schools from which they will graduate) for 2010 are: Janelle Wolters (Coldwater), Becky Dirksen (St. Henry), Megan Schaefer (Marion), Kayla Marie Pottkotter (Ft. Recovery), Sydney Schroeder (Celina) and Lindsay Shellabarger (Parkway). The recipients of the $750 scholarships were Kendra Koesters (Coldwater) and Katrina Brand (Marion).

Hoying says, "We have a nice mix of students entering a variety of medical fields that could be beneficial to the community if they chose to come back here after they have completed their studies. We have two students entering pre-med, one entering occupational therapy, one entering physical therapy, one in pharmacy, and three pursuing a degree in nursing."

Funds needed to finance these scholarships are raised though the Esmonde-Homan Memorial Golf Open which will be held on June 9 at the Mercer County Elks Golf Course. Persons wanting to play in the Golf Outing should contact John Hoying at 419-678-5679. Sponsorship opportunities are also available.

The MED Foundation hopes to continue to award these scholarships on an annual basis if there are funds available. Persons wishing to make a contribution can send their donation to: MED Foundation; c/o Mercer Health; 800 W. Main Street; Coldwater, Ohio 45828.
